AVTEC has been the recipient of the following Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds:
- CARES Act Funding (HEERF I)
- Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERFII) Authorized by the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA)
- Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERFIII) authorized by the American Recovery Plan(ARP)
Cares Act Funding (HEERF I)
In compliance with the provisions set forth under Section 4504 in Title II of the 2020 Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, also known as the CARES Act, Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) will provide CARES Student Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The intent of the CARES Act is to provide financial support to offset the cost for expenses incurred as a result of the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis. AVTEC received $71,438 and has awarded 50% ($35,719) to eligible students.
Who is eligible for CARES Act funding?
Full-time students enrolled in on-campus programs who have a completed 2019-2020 FAFSA on file as of May 4th, 2020, and are eligible to receive federal Title IV financial aid. Students enrolled in online or part-time courses are not eligible. AVTEC had 73 students who were eligible.
What expenses are eligible to be covered?
HEERF I funds can only be used to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19 such as:
- Food
- Housing
- Course materials
- Health care
- Child care
- Technology-related expenses
- Transportation
How was CARES Act funding distributed?
As all our eligible students were affected by the COVID Virus pandemic, AVTEC awarded 73 students $489.31 each. For a total of $35,719.63. These awards were made on May 6, 2020 and May 12, 2020.

Any AVTEC student enrolled in training that has documented an exceptional financial need, such as students who receive Pell Grants.
What expenses are eligible to be covered?
HEERF II and HEERF III funds can be used to cover expenses related to any component of the student’s Cost of Attendance such as:
- Tuition
- Food
- Housing
- Healthcare
- Child care
- Technology-related expenses
- Transportation
